Mangaluru, Aug 10, 2023: CAMPCO has welcomed the measures taken by the Union Government to check smuggling of arecanut into the nation in the guise of various other products including dry fruits.
It may be recalled here that CAMPCO has been pressurizing the government as well as the authorities concerned regarding the smuggling of arecanut which was affecting the prices of domestically grown arecanut.
CAMPCO Chairman Kishore Kumar Kodgi had even written to the government in this regard and had also met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to express his concern over the smuggling and had urged for suitable legal action.
In the wake of the directive of the Union Government, the DRI has intensified its checking, a press release from CAMPCO said and welcomed the recent seizing of 25.9 MT of arecanut in split form which was shipped from Dubai in the guise of Quick Lime Lumps in a 40 feet container, at the JNPT port in Mumbai and seizing of arecanuts from another shipment from Dubai in the name of Gypsum powder.
Kishore Kumar Kodgi, President of CAMPCO has expressed his gratitude to the Union Government and specially the DRI who have not only saved the revenue of public exchequer but have also safeguarded the interests of domestic market especially the farmers and lakhs of families whose livelihoods are entirely dependent on arecanut. It indicates a strong commitment by the DRI towards curbing smuggling of arecanut, the CAMPCO Chairman has said.
