Bundh has caused loss of Rs. 1,500 crore – Poojary

Mangalore, Sep. 21, 2012: Senior Congress leader and former union minister Janardhan Poojary flayed the opposition parties for calling for a nationwide bundh, which had led to a loss of Rs. 1,500 crore, according to him. The opposition parties have to pay back the losses, according to the Supreme Court ruling, he added.

Speaking about FDI in India’s multi-retail sector, he said that it will lead to development. Stating that the notion about FDI causing suffering for farmers is erroneous, the former minister said that farmers will benefit a lot as they can sell their produce for higher rates. FDI will lead to development of storage facilities, roads, and transport facilities. Pointing out that it is not mandatory for individual states to implement FDI in retail sector, he demanded to know why, in this case, some states are against the implementation of this policy.

He also said that the state government can reduce petrol and diesel prices by cutting down taxes on these fuels, but the state government is not willing to do this and is forcing the central government to take up this burden even though fuel price rise depends on global market trends.
