Mangalore, Sept. 20, 2012: The nationwide bundh called by BJP and other opposition parties in protest against diesel price hike was quite peaceful in Mangalore and Udupi.

However, people were put through a lot of inconvenience owing to the absence of public transportation. Moreover, stores and hotels did pull up their shutters and petrol bunks remained closed.

Processions related to Ganesh Chathurthi could not be taken out because of the bundh and had to be rescheduled to the evening of September 20. People who had visited their native places to take part in the festivities were unable to return to their workplaces because of the bundh.

Schools and colleges remained closed today and commercial vehicles such as buses and auto rickshaws did not ply although KSRTC buses operated for some time in the morning. People could be seen moving from one point to the other in search of transport and those who had arrived by train were left stranded at the railway station.

Although shops and offices remained closed, essentials such as milk and ambulance services were available. As a result, the city wore a deserted look throughout this day.

The opposition parties held a protest meeting in front of the DC’s office at ten this morning.

Protest in Udupi
The BJP organized a protest in front of the statue of Gandhi near the Service Bus Stand in Udupi. ZP President Katpady Shankar Poojary said in his public address that Manmohan Singh is Sonia Gandhi’s puppet, adding that the continuous rise in prices of essential commodities and fuel is because of the UPA government. He urged PM Manmohan Singh to resign.

A number of BJP leaders and workers such as Suresh Nayak, Bhaskar Shetty, and Shamala Kunder were present.
