3-day Konkani - Kannada translation workshop inaugurated

Mangalore, October 26, 2012: The World Konkani Centre at Shaktinagar hosted a 3-day translation workshop organized jointly by the Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Pradhikara of Bangalore and the Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation of Mangalore. Senior Kannada writer Na D’Souza inaugurated the workshop.

The dignitaries on the dais were senior Kannada and Konkani writer S. M. Krishna Rao, translator Dr. Geetha Shenoy, poet Melwyn Rodrigues, Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation President Basti Vaman Shenoy, and Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation Secretary Venkatesh Baliga.

In her address, Geetha Shenoy said that the World Konkani Centre has taken up the project of translating Konkani literature into Kannada. Stating that Kannada and Konkani literature grew together in the coastal area, she said that Konkani writers have contributed a great deal to Kannada literature.

Speaking of the benefits of translation, she said that it makes Konkani literature known to Kannada readers and develop language and culture. Stating that translation is a difficult task, requiring a strong hold over both languages, she said that 25 translators will take part in the workshop.

Na D’Souza and S. M. Krishna Rao also addressed the gathering and spoke of the importance of translating one’s works in other languages.

Among those present were Konkani Bhasha Mandal President Raghunath Shet, Gladys Rego, Madhav Pai, Prakash Shenoy, Dr. Kasturi Mohan Pai, Ramesh Pai, and others.
