Mangaluru, May 10, 2025: The heritage building of Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru will have new look and new clinical facilities will be added when the hospital celebrates its 175th anniversary on September 14, 2025.
The 175th anniversary celebrations will be held by the hospital, in association with Wenlock, Lady Goschen and KMC Old Students’ Association.
Talking to reporters on Thursday, the Wenlock Hospital Superintendent D.S. Shivaprakash said as part of the anniversary celebrations the heritage building, comprising of administrative and OPD blocks, was being given a fresh coat of paint. The hospital will take up refurbishing of old furniture and old medical equipment will be replaced with modern instruments.
Dr. Shivaprakash said works on construction new OPD block at a cost of ₹70 crore were on. The new critical care block of the hospital will be ready in a year.
The hospital was handling every year 30,000 inpatients, more than 3 lakh outpatients and conducts 1,000 surgeries, and 2,000 dialysis cycles. It has a state-of-art laboratory, regional blood transfusion centre, and new surgical and medicine blocks. Dr. Shivaprakash said equipment were being installed to operationalise operation theatres, CATH lab, radiology and endoscopy facilities at the surgical block.
Old Students’ Association president M. Shantharam Shetty, who has served in Government Lady Goschen and Wenlock Hospitals for over three decades, said in the recent years there was drastic improvement in the facilities at the two hospitals, which continues to provide quality treatment to patients from over 10 districts in Karnataka and several parts of Kerala. “We have gained a lot by serving in these two hospitals. The 175-year anniversary is the opportunity for us (old students) to give something big to the Wenlock Hospital. It will be announced shortly,” he said.
Association’s Honorary president and Dean of KMC Mangaluru B. Unnikrishnan said the KMC has been associated with Wenlock hospital for 70 years. The Wenlock hospital is the pride of Dakshina Kannada and the KMC was glad to continue its association with the hospital, he said.
Medical Superintendent of Lady Goschen Hospital Durgaprasad, Association’s General Secretary K.R. Kamath, and Association’s Treasurer Annayya Kulal also spoke.
