Bengaluru, May 22, 2025: The state cabinet has decided that the Ramanagara district will be renamed as Bengaluru South from Thursday.
Speaking to reporters during the customary post-cabinet briefing, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru development minister, said: "The Ramanagara district will be renamed as Bengaluru South but the headquarters will remain in Ramanagara itself."
Shivakumar said the Cabinet had discussed the legal implications of the decision, adding that there would be no financial implications.
Earlier, the Union government had objected to the state government’s decision to rename the district.
However, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil clarified that the current decision would stand as land records is a state subject.
