New Delhi, January 15, 2026: Following Iran’s closure of its airspace amid escalating tensions with the US over ongoing anti-government protests, Air India and IndiGo have issued travel advisories, warning that some international flights may be delayed due to the need to take alternate routes.
On social media platform X, Air India stated: “Due to the emerging situation in Iran, the subsequent closure of its airspace, and in view of the safety of our passengers, Air India flights overflying the region are now using an alternative routing, which may lead to delays.”
The airline added that flights that cannot be rerouted are being cancelled and urged passengers to check their flight status before traveling. “Air India regrets the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption. Safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority,” the statement said.
IndiGo also confirmed on X that some of its international flights have been affected by the airspace closure, which is beyond the airline’s control. Passengers were advised to check their flight status, explore flexible rebooking options, or request refunds. “Our teams are working diligently to assess the situation and support affected customers by offering the best possible alternatives,” the airline said.
Iran issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) late Wednesday, closing its airspace to all flights except those to or from the country with special permission.
The move comes amid rising threats from Western military officials suggesting a potential US military action. Iran is experiencing its largest anti-government protests since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, while US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned of “strong consequences” for Iranian leadership.
Meanwhile, the US has begun withdrawing some personnel from Middle East airbases, a US official confirmed on Wednesday. Earlier, a senior Iranian official warned neighboring countries that it would target US bases if Washington strikes Tehran.
