India records over 2.64 lakh Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, 6.7% higher than yesterday

New Delhi, Jan 14, 2022: India recorded 2,64,202 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, 6.7 per cent higher than the tally reported by the Union health ministry on Thursday.

As per the latest data, the number of Omicron cases in India has surged to 5,753.

With fresh infections, the country’s Covid-19 caseload has increased by 1,54,542 to 12,72,073 and the daily positivity rate stands at 14.78 per cent.

Also, 315 more people succumbed to the virus in the 24 hours, pushing the nationwide toll due to the infection to 4,85,350.

Also, as many as 1,09,345 people recovered from the Covid-19 infection in the last 24 hours.
On Thursday, Delhi reported 28,867 Covid-19 cases. This was the sharpest single-day spike the city witnessed since the

beginning of the pandemic. According to the data, Thursday’s positivity rate was the highest since May 3, when it was 29.6 per cent.

Gujarat reported 11,176 new coronavirus positive cases, highest in nearly eight months, while five patients succumbed to the infection, the state health department said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra registered 46,406 new coronavirus cases, 317 less than a day before, taking the overall tally to 70,81,067, while 36 more patients died due to the infection. No new case of the highly contagious Omicron variant was reported in the state, keeping its tally unchanged at 1,367, it said.

Uttar Pradesh logged 14,765 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday, raising the tally of active cases in the state to 71,022 while six more fatalities pushed the death toll to 22,946.

In Haryana, there was no let up in the rising trend of Covid-19 cases with 7,591 fresh infections and two fatalities reported on Thursday. The total number of active cases in the state now stands at over 35,979.

Odisha recorded 10,059 fresh Covid-19 cases, 14.6 per cent higher than the previous day and the biggest daily spike in over seven months, the state health department said on Thursday.
