‘Congress promised 200 units of free power’: Villagers in Karnataka refuse to pay electricity bills

Bengaluru, May 18, 2023: The Congress, which won in the recently held Karnataka assembly election, is still in the process of forming government in the state, but people in some parts are already demanding that promises made by the party be fulfilled. One of the Congress’s major poll promises was giving 200 units of free electricity.

And now, people from villages in districts like Koppal, Kalaburagi and Chitradurga have reportedly refused to pay electricity bills. The people say that they don’t need to pay their bills since Congress had offered them free electricity if it came to power.

This took place when officials from the electricity department went to the villages to carry out meter readings. When one of the meter-readers handed over a bill to a woman in Chitradurga, she refused to pay the bill and asserted that the people are entitled to the pre-poll promises from the minute they voted for Congress in the recent Assembly election.

“Let Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar pay our bills. They said they will implement the guarantee of 200 free units soon after the elections. So don’t come here. We won’t pay the bill. Once we pressed the button when voting, we were entitled to these guarantees,” the woman said, referring to Congress’s CM-designate Siddaramaiah and state party unit president DK Shivakumar.

“We won’t pay the current bill. No matter what, we are promised 200 units of free power and we will have it. Even if the CM is not there yet,” said another person from Koppal.
