A special squad of police, acting on a tip off, shot down a wanted criminal in an encounter at Swarnagiri Layout near Pachanady on October 8, Thursday.
The wanted man, who later succumbed to his injuries, was identified as Sardar (34), a native of Bijapur. He is also a notorious rowdy, noted for his criminal activities in Bangalore. A total of 21 criminal cases were registered against Sardar; and he had recently escaped from Bijapur jail.
Police received a tip that Sardar and his associates Sanjay of Tumkur, Praveen of Bangalore, Malik of Chikmagalur, and Shiva Kumar of Bellary had rented a house at Swarnagiri Layout and planned to kill a businessman who was believed to be carrying Rs. 5 crores in his suitcase.
The episode was almost film-like as police officers chased Sardar and his cronies, who were travelling in a car with a fake license plate. The gangsters refused to stop their vehicle and shot at the police, who returned fire. The rowdy’s car collided against a police vehicle and he sustained severe injuries. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared to be dead. Police recovered packets of chilli powder and a pistol from the car.
The encounter spot was visited by Gopal Hosur, the inspector general of police (western range) and Dr. A. S. Rao, the superintendent of police. The operation was conducted by a special police squad led by SI Prakash.
