Mangalore, Oct 2, 2012: The voters’ lists in the district’s six assembly constituencies will be revised from Oct 1 to Oct 31 as per the Election Commission of India’s order.
Announcing the above at a press conference held in his office on Monday, DC Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda said that the draft of the voters’ list will be released on Oct 1 and will be revised between Oct 1 and Oct 31, giving eligible voters the chance to apply and register themselves. The final list will be announced on Jan 5, 2013, he said
Clarifying that the Oct 1 to Oct 31 deadline applies only to constituencies outside the limits of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), the DC said that the deadline for voters’ list revision in constituencies within MCC limits is Oct 16 to Nov 15, adding that the draft of the voters’ list for MCC limits will be released on Oct 16 and the final list will be announced on Jan 16, 2013.
Eligible voters who have not yet registered themselves can apply for the same by submitting age verification documents, proof of address, and recent passport sized photograph. If they do not find their names in the draft voters’ list, they will have to submit a fresh application, he said.
Eligible voters can submit their applications to booth level officers, tahildars, revenue officers, or assistant commissioner or they can drop their application in the drop box set up at taluk offices, the assistant commissioner’s office, and the Mangalore City Corporation. Citizens can also apply online at ceokarnataka.kar.nic.in.
Applications to remove names of dead or migrated citizens from draft voters’ lists can be submitted through Form 7. Applicants need to use Form 8 if they want to correct spelling of names in existing photographed ID cards. In case of change of address, applicants must use Form 8A.
The district administration has planned to stage road shows, magic shows, street plays, competitions for school children, and others to enhance awareness among the public. A meeting of principals of various colleges and schools will also be called to instruct schools and colleges to guide their above-18 students to register their names in the voters’ list.
The DC said that there are 13,91,918 registered voters in the district, which has a total population of around 21 lakh.
