Uppinangady, Jul 1, 2026: After running nearly dry due to a prolonged rain deficit at the onset of the monsoon, the Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers in Dakshina Kannada have been rejuvenated by heavy rainfall over the past two days. As a result, the Udbhava Linga, located in the middle of the river near the Shri Sahasralingeshwara–Mahakali Temple in Uppinangady, has been completely submerged.
In anticipation of the monsoon, the gates of the Biliyoor Kindi Barrage across the Nethravathi River were opened in early June. Although the release of stored backwaters temporarily restored the river’s flow, the continued lack of rainfall caused large stretches of the river to dry up. During that period, the Udbhava Linga had emerged above the water, allowing devotees to offer prayers.
However, with heavy rains lashing the region in the final days of June, water levels in both the Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers have risen significantly, submerging the Udbhava Linga once again. The revival of the rivers has brought relief and joy to farmers and local residents alike.
