Mangalore, Feb 14, 2014: Thieves who burgled the Shree Durgaparameshwari Temple at Kumpala near Ullal on February 12, Wednesday night have decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 3 lakhs apart from cash. The theft came to light when the temple priest arrived at the shrine on Thursday morning for the pooja.
Presently, with the construction works of the dining hall (Anna Chatra) underway to the right side of the temple, the thieves had climbed the wall and had dislodged the temple roofing to enter.
The stolen valuables include silver mask of the Lord, silver prabhavali, prabhavali of Durgadevi idol and karimani chain weighing two and a half sovereigns. It is learnt, a cash of Rs 25,000 kept in the temple for Shivaratri celebrations as well as cash in the offering box have been stolen.
Ullal police are investigating. Dog squad and finger print experts have been pressed into service. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and several BJP leaders including MLC Ganesh Karnik and former minister Krishna Palemar visited the temple on hearing news about the burglary.
