Mangalore, June 24, 2014 : Rare varieties of jack fruits,  with names like Kalairu, Chocha Pasand, Valkatte, Ubaru, O.H, Kaje, Kadambila - 1,2,3 and so were exhibited at the jackfruit fair organised by Agricultural University, Bangalore and Agricultural Cooperative Society, Punacha, in the premises of Sri Mahishamardhini Temple, Punacha in Vittal on June 22.

Also, a choice of dishes prepared out of jackfruit were on display. The special jackfruit menu relished the tastebuds of jackfruit lovers at lunch. A number of people bought jackfruit saplings too. Thousands of people witnessed the unique fair.

Retired Forest Officer Gabriel P S Veigas, who presided over the inaugural function said that the implementation of a three point programme is necessary for the popularisation of jackfruits. Firstly, selection of good variety of jackfruit, secondly, development of industries complimentary for the utilisation of the fruit and market, being the third one, he said.

Adike Partike Executive Editor Shree Padre said that jackfruit is a profitable commodity in foreign countries. In Kerala, jackfruit seeds alone cost Rs 75 per kilo during off season, he added. Nalini Malakodi and Shilpa Kaje demonstrated wide range of jackfruit cuisine on the occasion.

SR Rangamurthy inaugurated the fair. Agricultural University (Bangalore) Associate Professor Dr Shaymalamma delivered the keynote address and Agricultural Co-operative Bank (Punacha) President Deviprasad Kallaje was the chief guest.
