Textbook shortage delivers blow to academic progress

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, July 8: Although more than one month has passed after schools re-commenced, the textbooks are still not available. Exams are now fast approaching, but textbooks are nowhere in sight. Reliable sources say that the officials concerned are simply making empty promises and delivering nothing.

school childrenRamachandra Gowda, the subject inspector and nodal officer for textbooks, told that 9,59,915 textbooks have already been delivered to government schools from Std I to X and aided schools from Std I to VIII. About 84,030 books are yet to be delivered, but 4 textbook titles are not yet ready. He also said that 4,37,714 books have already been delivered to private schools and aided schools, but 1,15,835 books are yet to be delivered.

According to Gowda, the delay in text book delivery is because of the delay in arrival of the orders, the DDs, and also the rising demands. Although May 31 was the last date to submit DDs, some schools are still sending orders.

According to Student Information 2009 - 10, a state government publication that gives details of student population in DK, there were 1,55,413 students in government schools in Std I to X and 71,078 students in aided schools in Std I to VIII while in private schools, the student population was 86,493. Textbooks were printed and delivered on the basis of these statistics. However, the current year has seen a rise in the order by 40,000 books in the free components and 40,722 in private sectors, which accounts for the late delivery of the books.

Mr. Gowda assured all concerned that the government is doing its best to deliver the books on time.
