Taken for a ride : Fraudulent firm at Krishnapura shuts doors

MangaloreApril 11, 2012  : People of Dakshina Kannada district take pride in the fact that they are considered intelligent and enterprising. But this hasn’t stopped fraudulent firms from cheating them and we have umpteen such examples.

One latest instance is that of a firm which was opened  in Krishnapura near Suratkal on March 23  this year, shutting its doors within less than a month leaving hundreds of people who fell trap to the lurings, in the lurch after losing their hard earned money.

 

The modus operandi of this firm named Manju Agencies dealing in household appliances and opened by some people of Tamil Nadu origin in a rented building at Krishnapura, was simple. Customers had to pay 50 per cent of the cost of any product chosen by them and they could take home the product after ten days. Of course they need not pay even a single paisa more than 50 per cent of the amount.  The shopkeepers in fact had even availed license from the MCC.

In no time, several swarmed the shop despite the warning bells issued by the  cops. To know that some even walked home proudly with the products purchased at half the prices, lured many and they straightly walked into the trap.

However, everything ended on  the night of April 9, Monday when the shopkeeper called the building owner saying he was returning hometown and that the shop could be opened with the keys left in his rented house. When the shop was opened  on the morning of April 10, Tuesday in police presence, only a  few products and some documents could be found.

As per the receipts found, nearly 350 people had paid 50 per cent of the cost of the products of their choice. Of them only a few could actually get the products, while the rest can only blame themselves for their folly.
