Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said on Friday that link roads in Udupi city will be developed at a cost of Rs. 48 crore under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT) of the Union Government.

sorake 1He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the construction of 12 roads, one bridge and five rainwater drains under the second phase of Nagarothana scheme at a cost of Rs. 30 crore, here.

Mr. Sorake said the State government had already sanctioned Rs. 170 crore for various developmental projects in Udupi city including underground drainage and drinking water facilities under the Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP) at a cost of Rs. 90 crore.

These projects are being implemented keeping in mind the requirements of the city for the next 25 years.

He said the Government was also planning to set up new town panchayats in the State and increase the jurisdiction of Udupi city by bringing nearby villages into its ambit.

The government will give Udupi the “heritage town” tag sine it is a pilgrimage centre. Development of Malpe beach and St. Mary’s Island would be a priority. “A master plan will be prepared for the development of Udupi city,” he said.

New buses

The State would get 2,100 buses under the second phase of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM). Of these 2,100 buses, 69 would be provided for the Coastal region.
