Post Centenary Silver Jubilee celebrations of Mangalore Diocese on Feb 11-12

Mangalore, Feb 6, 2012: The Diocese of Mangalore is completing 125 years of its existence in the year 2012. To mark this occasion, the Post Centenary Silver Jubilee celebrations will be held on Feb 11 and Feb 12. The celebrations are schedules to be held at the Rosario Cathedral grounds on Feb 11 and at Nehru Maidan on Feb 12, said Most Rev Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore.


He was speaking at the press meet held at Bishop’s House on Feb 6, Monday. He also said that the Diocese of Mangalore has 161 parishes spread across the three districts, with a Catholic population of nearly 4,00, 000. There are 335 diocesan priest, 160 religious priest and 1600 women religious (nuns) serving the diocese.  The diocese administers educational institutions from play school till engineering and medical colleges, as well as health care institutions like hospitals and dispensaries, old age homes etc. The gospel messages of love and service is made a reality through these institutions.

Speaking on the Jubille programme, Bishop said that the programme on Feb 11, Saturday will begin at 4 pm at the Rosario Cathedral grounds with the Eucharistic celebration. Most Archbishop Savio Hon, secretary of the congregation of the Evangelization of the peoples will be the main celebrant. There will be nearly 20 Bishops and 300 priests concelebrating. 15, 000 people are expected to e present for the occasion. The stage programme will follow around 5.30 pm. Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the Archbishop of Bombay and Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, the Nuncio and Most Rev Bernard Moras, the Archbisop of Bangalore, MP Oscar Fernandes,Mabel Rebello, Dr V C Acharya, Minister for higher education, District in charge minister Krishna J Palemar and others will be present on the occasion.


On Feb 12, Sunday, the programme begins at 4 pm at Nehru Maidan with Eucharistic celebration BY HIS Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Most Rev Salvatore Pennacchio and Archbishop Savio Hon, Most Rev Bernard Moras will be present. 


Nearly 30 Bishops and 500 priests and nearly 50,000 people are expected to participate. Chief Minister of Karnataka DV Sadananda Gowda and Minister for Corporate Affairs Veerappa Moily will be the chief guest, he said.


Vicar General Rtd Rev Denis Prabhu, chancellor Fr Henry Sequiera, PRO Fr William Menezes, Fr Onil D’Souza, Fr George, Fr J B Crasta, Mr Ivan D’Souza, Mr Marcel Monteiro, Mr Sushil Naronha, Raymond D’Cunha and Elias Fernandes were present at the press meet.
