Manual scavenging, CDP issues discussed at MCC meet

Mangalore, Nov 30, 2011: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) council meeting held in the premises of the MCC on Nov 29 Tuesday was full of disturbances. Issues such as road development, manual scavenging, CDP, and others were discussed.

The Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) for Mangalore was also discussed. Opposing the CDP, Mariamma Thomas said that it will create innumerable problems for the backward sections of society. Other members also alleged that the plan has been created specifically for the benefit of builders. Mayor Praveen promised that a meeting will be convened with the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to discuss these concerns. 

Manual Scavenging

Congress corporator Appi demanded that manual scavenging, which is being done by members of the Koraga community for the past 30 years, should be ended and suggested that daily wage earners should be given the status of permanent workers in the MCC. The mayor said that the proposal will be sent to the state government, following which directives will be issued. 

Roads

When the issue of a road being constructed near Circuit House by Nirmithi Centre came up for discussion, Congress leader Harinath alleged that the project is saturated with corruption. He said that no facilities have been provided for storm water drains and footpaths, increasing the possibility of flooding during the rainy season. 

Speaking in support of Nirmithi, the BJP corporators remarked that people wearing black glasses see the world as black. The remark angered Harinath who demanded an immediate apology, following which Mayor Praveen adjourned the session.
