MCC plans to convert MG Road into six-lane road

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Dec 1, 2010: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has decided to widen the 18-metre four-lane road from PVS Circle to Lady Hill Circle, called Mahatma Gandhi Road, into a 24-meter six-lane road. A proposal for land acquisition to widen the road stretch was approved during the corporation council meeting held on Monday.

According to the MCC, the road requires a facelift because of the heavy traffic it withstands on a daily basis. Since a number of educational institutions are located along MG Road and Kodialbail, at least 7000 students use the road everyday. The land to the right while approaching PVS Circle to Lady Hill will be acquired, said the MCC Development Cell. A building belonging to a temple is located on this property.

According to the plan, the 24-meter road will have pavements 1.5 meter wide on each side and a carriageway 20 metre wide and a 1 meter wide median.

M. Shankar Bhat, the former mayor, said that he had tried to convince the occupants of the temple building near PVS circle to give the land for road-widening purposes. The corporation had promised to build them another building behind the spot. Everybody, except one trader, had refused, and the civic body had to acquire the property.
