Mangalore, August 21, 2012: Konkani Manyata Divas was celebrated in commemoration of the 20th year of the inclusion of Konkani in the Indian Constitution, came to an end on August 20, Monday. The chief guest of the valedictory ceremony was Congress member J. R. Lobo.

Among the dignitaries on the dais were Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy President Kasargod Chinna, Jagotik Konkani Songhatton Secretary Eric Ozario, Konkani Prachar Sanchalan President Roy Castelino, Mandd Sobhann President Stany Alvares, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Registrar Devdas Pai, and others.

In his address, J. R. Lobo urged people to preserve and promote Konkani language and culture and pass it on to the next generations.

Mr. Ozario expressed pride that Konkani is among the 22 languages recognized in the Indian Constitution. He also announced that he will conduct a singing workshop for high school and college students at Kalaangan on September 16. The workshop is free and 10 Konkani songs will be taught, and only the first 60 entries will be accepted, he added.

Congratulating students who had taken part in the competitions, Kasargod Chinna announced that Konkani Teachers’ Day will be celebrated on September 6th every year.

Mandd Sobhann in collaboration with Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, and Jagotik Konkani Songhatton held a series of competitions, in which around 477 students had taken part. Prizes were distributed among them on this occasion.
