Konaje SI accused of harassing Dalit couple

Mangalore, April 1, 2013 : At the SC/ST grievance redressal meet held at the Mangalore Police Commissioner’s office on March 31, Sunday, representatives of the Dalit community took the Konaje SI S S Meti to task  for allegedly harassing a Dalit couple.

The couple named Lakshman and Nalini from Amblamogar in Konaje alleged they were harassed by the police officer at the behest of a few influential people in connection with a land dispute.

Referring to the case, Nalini said  though a land measuring 65 cents was in the name of Lakshman and his mother Gangu, a few rich people who wanted to lay an approach road through their land were troubling them.

Even a court ruling was in favour of us, Nalin said adding though her husband dumped mud to obstruct them from constructing a road, the SI at the behest of the latter, had vacated the  mud and even threatened to assault Lakshman, she alleged.

Though the SI Meti who was present said he did so at the directions of  higher officials, DSS leader Anand and others  refuted the claim.

After the meeting, the Dalit leaders said they would be lodging a contempt of court against a case the SI.
