Bangalore, Jan 13: A meeting of the directors of the Karnataka Co-Operative Milk Federation (KMF)and heads and MDs of statewide local milk federations met under the chairmanship of K Somasekhara Reddy on Saturday.

A major and far-reaching decision taken was to hike the price of Nandini milk by Rs 5 a litre, since there was an all-round demand for it from different regions. Discussions were held on the present financial status, rise in the prices of raw material and the possible financial losses if the same price of milk was continued and the measures to be taken to check the losses.

Nandini price hike

Strong representations were heard that the farmers supplying milk were facing hardships in view of the drought situations and rise in the prices of cattle feed. It was decided to cushion this loss by way of a hike of Rs 5, out of which Rs 3 would go to the cattle farmer, Rs 1 to KMF and Rs 1 to the respective federations. The KMF managing board is scheduled to meet on Jan 21. The matter would be placed before it and a proposal would be sent to the state government for approval.
A mass meet of Bangalore urban, rural and Ramanagara district milk producers (BAMUL) is scheduled to be held on Sunday. Chief minister Shettar was expected to announce the hike in milk price at this meet, according to Karunakara Reddy. But informed sources said that Shettar was unlikely to do so in view of the forthcoming assembly elections.

Political observers feel that since Karunakara Reddy is close to the Bellary camp, he is likely to align himself with B SriRamulu’s BSR Congress in the near future. The BJP government felt that while Reddy would reap the benefit of goodwill from the milk suppliers, the ruling party might have to bear the blame of hike and thereby lose the milk buyers’ votes which are much larger in number.
