Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Feb 13, 2012: The Karavali Karnataka Janabhivriddhi Vedike organized a protest against the exporters’ conclave, which was being held in TMA Pai Convention Centre on MG Road on Feb 13 Tuesday.

The forum issued a press release in which it stated that the protest was being held because of certain past experiences with major projects in the coastal belt. According to the protestors, the response of the authorities to citizens’ complaints regarding non compliance with norms reveals shocking patterns of neglecting the concerns of the people and condoning corporate illegalities.

T. R. Bhat, the spokesperson of the vedike, said that several families who lost their lands 17 years ago to the ELF Gas, which is now called Total Gas, at Thokur, did not receive the benefits promised to them by the government as well as the industry. Although each family was promised a job, nine families are still waiting for these benefits, he said.

The representatives of 11 Kudubi families who lost their lands to Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) participated in the protest.

According to the press release, projects that do not result in equitable growth and ensure social justice are counterproductive in nature.

Vidya Dinakar, the legal affairs coordinator and others, were also present.
