Mangalore, Aug 17, 2013: SG Mayya, professor, water resources engineering, department of applied mechanics and hydraulics, NITK said that the construction activities in the name of river diversion in Western Ghats will affect the rainfall in the entire South India.
He was speaking on the theme ‘Nethravati reversion diversion scheme’ at an interactive meeting at Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) hall on Aug 17, Saturday. He also said that the proposed river diversion project is not transparent and the information provided on the proposal is misleading.
Mayya said that in order to avoid objection from people in the Nethravati river basin, they have just changed the title as ‘Scheme for diversion of flood waters from Sakleshpur (West) to Kolar and Chikballapur’.
If the construction activities are taken up in Western Ghats in the name of Nethravati river diversion project, then it would be like calling another Uttarkhand disaster in the region.
Mayya said that no objection in diversion of river in order to provide drinking water for other regions, if they give the estimation of demand for water required for drinking water, irrigation, industrial needs, urban water requirement and other needs.
