Besides Heggade and Srinivas, the University had chosen to confer the award on research scholar and educationist M M Kalburgi, Dalit writer Baraguru Ramchandrappa and stage artiste Harijana Padmamma for their contribution to Kannada language, culture and traditional values.

The awards were presented to Heggade, who is the Dharmadhikari (religious head) of Dharmasthala Temple in South Kanara district, and Srinivas who were unable to make it to the varsity’’s convocation ceremony held last month.

Heggade, who formed Shri Dharmasthala Majnunatheshwara Dharmothana Trust to protect the sculptures and prominent temples, said true India lay in its villages and temples and stressed there was a need to preserve ancient manuscripts many of which continued to be in the possession of many households, mutts and temples.

Srinivas thanked the university for honouring him. The septuagenarian also chose to hum a few lines on the occasion.
