Govt will continue development work: Palemar on Independence Day

Mangalore, Aug 15: “The district administration and the state government will continue its developmental programmes in DK without any communal or gender discrimination,” said Krishna J. Palemar, the district-in-charge minister, in his 64th Independence Day address at a special programme organized by the district administration at Nehru Maidan on the morning of Aug 15, Sunday.

Earlier, the minister hoisted the national flag in the presence of prominent personalities and inspected the guard of honor in a vehicle. Eighteen teams comprising Reserve Police, District Armed Reserve (DAR) police, Civil, Traffic, Coast Guards, Home Guards, Guides, Scouts, NCC, Bharat Seva Dal, and students participated in the Independence Day parade.

Lauding the secular spirit exhibited by the people of DK, the minister expressed his gratitude toward those who volunteered their services after the May 22 plane crash. He assured the people that the state government will implement all the proposed developmental and welfare scheme at the earliest possible.

Speaking about the developmental projects undertaken in DK during the last two years, the minister said that over Rs. 1,126 crore have been spent on developing DK. He said that Rs. 1,230 have been spent on solving drinking water problems in rural areas and Rs. 200 crore have been earmarked for constructing roads in rural areas. Houses have been provided for 7,276 beneficiaries in a bid to solve the housing problem in the district, he said.

DC V. Ponnuraj, Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police Dr. A. S. Rao, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLAs U. T. Khader and Yogish Bhat, MLC Ganesh Karnik, and many other prominent citizens of Mangalore participated in the Independence Day programme.

As a part of the independence day, the Dakshina Kannada Sports Promoters organized the 5 over Independence Cup Cricket, in which the Mangalore Eleven Team, Press Eleven Team, Superintendent of Police Eleven Team, Deputy Commissioner Eleven Team, Mayor Eleven Team and Vice – Chancellor Eleven  Team actively participated giving the tough competition to each team.

In the match Deputy Commissioner Eleven Team won the winner’s Trophy while  Press Eleven Team received the runner up Trophy.

Sadanada Shetty, owner of Sports Promoters handed over the trophies to the  first winning team Captain DC VPonnuraj and second winning teams captain Harsha of Indian Express.  Later he also felicitated Shepard and Ivan Patrao for their long term contribution in the field of sports.
