Golden chariot work at Kateel temple begins at ’Swarna muhurtha’

Mangalore, August 25, 2013:The auspicious time ”Swarna muhurtha” was drawn today to initiate the work of golden chariot at Kateel Shri Durga Parameshwari temple on Sunday.


The initiation of the development work of Kateel Moolakudru, the place of origin of the temple and the inauguration of paperless office were also done today at the temple premises.

Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment B Ramanath Rai initiated the ‘swarna muhurtham’ and told that it is the long awaited dream of the devotees to have a golden chariot prepared for the deity, turning to reality. He symbolically handed over gold to Gujjadi Ramdas Naik, proprietor of Swarna Jewellers, Udupi, under the guidance of whom, the work of golden chariot will be carried out. 

Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader inaugurated the paperless office and opined that other temples and organisations should follow the model initiative of the temple. He meanwhile said steps will be taken towards the computerisation of  Wenlok Government Hospital in Mangalore. He meanwhile assured of taking steps towards the construction of a Government hospital in Kateel, once the land is sanctioned by the Revenue department.

Minister for Youth Services, Sports and Fisheries K Abhayachandra Jain presided over the programme and told that the ministers from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will make collective effort to convince the Central Government to withdraw the Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP), proposed to be taken up at Niddodi.

Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake initiated the development work of Kateel Moolakudru.


Kateel Shri Durgaparameshwari temple Administrator and MCC Commissioner Shanadi Ajit Kumar Hegde, temple priests Venkatramana Asranna, Ananthapadmanabha Asranna, Harinarayana Asranna, Opposition Leader in Legislative Council  D V Sadananda Gowda, MLA B A Moideen Bava, Bangalore Urban MLC Dayananda Reddy, Kateel temple hereditary administrator Vasudeva Asranna, Mumbai Bunts Association former President Aikala Harish Shetty were present among others.

The golden chariot


The proposed 14 feet tall golden chariot will be prepared at an estimate cost of Rs 5 crore, making use of 12 kg gold and 200 kg silver. The chariot will be the tallest golden chariot in the state.
