Mangalore, Jan 27, 2012: Shri Keshavananda Bharati Swamiji of Edaneer Mutt inaugurated the 7th Akhila Bharata Yakshagana Sahithya Sammelana at Town Hall on Jan 27 Friday.
The event, which has been jointly organized by the Kalkura Prathishtana and the Karnataka Samskrithika Kala Prathishtana, will feature different forms of Yakshagana and several discourses on the art. It will conclude on Jan 29 Sunday.
N. Yogish Bhat, the deputy speaker of the legislative assembly, spoke on the occasion. He said that all Yakshagana artistes need to be provided life and health security and revealed that the state government has earmarked Rs. 10 lakh for the Yakshagana Academy to encourage the art.
He also released K. J. Eshwar Bhat’s book “Kubanoor Smrithi,” written in commemoration of Kubanoor Balakrishna Rao and published by Kalkura Prathishtana.
Gurudevananda Swamiji of Odiyoor Mutt said in his benedictory address that events such as these play an active role in the preservation of the art of Yakshagana. Speaking about the richness of Yakshagana, he said that it is a blend of music, dialogues, and explanation.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, S. M. Panjaje, the president of Karnataka Samskritika Kala Prathishtana and himself a Yakshagana artiste, said that the art of Yakshagana survived because educated people expressed interest in it.
Various forms of Yakshagana such as Doddata, Shri Krishna Paarijatha, Sannata, Ghattada Kore, Tenku, Bayalata, Badagu, Togalu Bombeyata, and Bombeyata will be showcased at this event. K. Govinda Bhat, senior artiste presided over this 3-day event.
Among the dignitaries present were ZP President K. T. Shailaja Bhat, Yakshagana Bayalata Academy President Prof. M. L. Samaga, and Dr. M. Prabhakar Joshi.
