Burst water pipes in city intensify water problems

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Apr 23, 2012: A water pipe burst at Pumpwell on April 23 Monday leading to heavy loss of water. Simultaneously, pipes at Simon Lane and Nagori also burst.

Local people say that the pipe at Pumpwell had started leaking on the night of April 22 Sunday. At around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, the pressure in the pipe increased, causing it to burst. The water gushed out of the broken pipe to a distance of 20ft, forcing vehicles to stop.

The Pumpwell pipe supplies water from Thumbay vented dam to the tank at Bendoorwell.

Emergency measures were taken to stop water supply at the dam, owing to which people in three areas in the city are facing severe water problems.

In spite of the emergency measures, the pipe is still leaking.

These pipes are made of wrought iron and are covered by cement. According to reliable sources, air pressure built up inside the pipes as water is being supplied on alternate days, leading the pipes to burst.

Although the police arrived at the spot, Nenge Gowda, the executive engineer of the MCC, has not yet arrived.

These incidents have worsened the city’s water problems.
