Bike rider dies in accident, police apathy shocks public

Mangalore, June 7, 2012 : A bike rider died on the spot when his bike dashed into a tipper at Kadri on the evening of June 6, Wednesday.

The deceased is Eustuse Mendonca (49) of Kulshekar, an entrepreneur. His body remained on the accident spot even half an hour after he fell off his bike. Although a police jeep arrived 20 minutes after the accident, they did not touch the body, but just stood there near the jeep. When higher police officers arrived on the spot a bit later, they too did nothing to move the body.

 

 

 

The local people then wanted to know why an ambulance has not been called and why the police were doing nothing about shifting the body. Although the police replied that the ambulance was on the way, it did not arrive for a long time. Finally, Arun, brother of the victim, and his friend lifted the body and began walking away with it.

When he saw this, Sandesh, the SI of Kankanady traffic police, stopped a pick-up truck and asked the driver to take the body. The furious people then demanded to know why the police could not get any government vehicle for this. A fierce quarrel then broke out between the police and the public, with the public demanding to know why the ambulance did not reach on time and why the police could not move the body.

The ambulance finally arrived and took the body away.

Mohammed, the driver of the tipper, said that he was shifting mud from Kankanady to Kottara. He made no comments on the accident, but appeared drunk. The police arrested him and took him away.
