March 9: Chugging off the Railway track, Indian International athlete A C Ashwini became the brand ambassador for the Udupi headquartered Public sector lender Corporation Bank.

At a function held in a hotel in Bangalore on Tuesday, Mar 8, Indian sprint athlete Ashwini Chidananda Shetty Akkunji hailing from Siddapura in Kundapur taluk in Udupi district,  was formally designated the bank’s brand ambassador with the grade of manager.

Ashwini, eyeing for a gold in the 2012 London Olympics, has been appointed a manager in the bank and would also be a brand ambassador for one of the oldest public sector bank in the country.

A 400 M gold medalist at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games, Ashwini had capped her best performance winning two gold medals at the China Asian Games -- winning the 400 m event and the 400 m relay.

Bank Chairman and Managing Director Ramnath Pradeep told newsmen that the bank would extend all support to the Olympic golden endevour of Ashwini Ashwini, who is nursing a right hand fracture. Ashwini Akkunji said that she would be leaving for the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports to resume her practice. A few months ago she suffered the fracture due to a fall during practice here. ’’I still feel some pain, but I am ready for resuming my practice at the camp in Patiala,’’ she said.

She said a decision on the coach was also expected to made shortly.

Ashwini was extremely grateful to the bank for extending all necessary help to realise her dream of winning a gold at the next London Olympics.

The actor Tara, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said, “I am very happy that you chose Ashwini (as brand ambassador), but why don’t you consider artistes too as brand ambassadors?”

“You people only pick cricketers and sportspersons. You can give me a job too,” she said in jest, but ensured the officials got the message. The bank officials were taken aback for a while. A senior official quipped, “That is a good idea ma’am, but you will need to have a deposit with us before we give you the job,” to which Tara replied, “You can put all my salary in the deposit.”
