Mangaluru, May 22, 2025: The A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences is proud to announce the inauguration of its cutting-edge Molecular Laboratory, established with major funding support of Rs 30,00,000 from the VGST K-FIST Level 2 Project and Nitte (Deemed to be University) and was formally inaugurated by the Honourable Chancellor of Niite DU Shri N Vinaya Hegde and the Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Niite DU Prof Dr MS Moodithaya . The title of the project is “FOK1 Vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism and its correlation with precancerous lesion”.
The Principal investigator of the project is Prof Dr Mithra N Hegde, Principal and Dean of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences and co-investigator is Dr Nireeksha, Lecturer from the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Nitte DU.
This new facility represents a significant milestone in the institute’s commitment to advancing biomedical research and fostering innovation in dental sciences. Equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation, the lab provides capabilities for DNA isolation, quantification, PCR, RFLP analysis, spectrophotometric estimations, and ELISA-based assays. Additionally, the laboratory houses ultra-low temperature storage systems at -20°C and -80°C, ensuring optimal preservation of biological samples for long-term research needs.
This advanced infrastructure is set to greatly benefit both faculty and students by enhancing the scope and quality of research conducted within the institution. The lab enables hands-on training in molecular biology techniques and opens new avenues for interdisciplinary studies in genetics, microbiology and biochemistry. Faculty members will be able to pursue high
impact research projects with improved precision and reliability, thereby contributing to the global body of scientific knowledge and promoting collaborative research opportunities at national and international levels.
With this development, A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences strengthens its role as a centre of excellence in dental education and research. The Molecular Laboratory not only enriches the academic experience of postgraduate and undergraduate students but also empowers them with skills that are essential in today’s competitive research environment. This initiative reflects the institute’s vision to integrate modern science with clinical practice, fostering innovation that ultimately benefits patient care and public health.
