Mangalore, June 7, 2012 : A woman died and five others belonging to the same family sustained injuries when their Maruthi 800 car rolled off a bridge and fell into a river near Shringeri, Chikmagalur on June 7, Thursday.

The deceased is Sarojini (60), wife of Dasappa Gowda, one of those injured. The entire family has been admitted to AJ Hospital, Mangalore.

The family lives in Panja, Sullia. Dasappa and his wife with their daughter Jyothi, son-in-law Koragappa, and grandchildren Bhavishya and Yashaswi were going to Mangalore from Shringeri.

Their car met with an accident at 9:30 a.m. when they reached the Ghats, 15kms from Shringeri. Since the roads were slippery because of the rains, Koragappa, who was driving the car, lost control of the vehicle, as a result of which it rolled over and fell into the river 15ft below.

Since there was no mobile network, the family could not call for help. They were in the river till local people spotted them and stopped a passing ambulance. The driver of the ambulance and the local people rescued the family and rushed them to AJ Hospital.

Sarojini died on the way to hospital. The three adults are in a serious condition, but Yashaswi sustained minor injuries and Bhavishya escaped unhurt.
