New Delhi, July 13, 2025: President Droupadi Murmu has nominated top lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, social worker C Sadanandan Master and historian Meenakshi Jain to the Rajya Sabha.
The nominations fill four vacant seats in the Upper House and were announced via a gazette notification. As per the Constitution, the President can nominate up to 12 members with notable contributions in literature, science, art, and social service.
Nikam, 72, is known for prosecuting high-profile cases including the 1993 Mumbai blasts and the 26/11 attacks. Shringla, a career diplomat, was India’s Foreign Secretary and G20 Chief Coordinator in 2023.
Sadanandan Master, a Kerala-based educator and activist, survived a brutal political attack three decades ago. Meenakshi Jain, a Padma Shri awardee, is a respected historian and former ICHR member.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the nominees, praising their contributions to the nation in their respective fields.
