India Overtakes Japan to Become World’s Fourth-Largest Economy: NITI Aayog CEO

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, May 25, 2025: India has surpassed Japan to become the fourth-largest economy in the world, NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam announced on Saturday. The statement came following the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog.

Addressing the media, Mr. Subrahmanyam said, “We are the fourth-largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy today.” He cited data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support the claim, noting that only the United States, China, and Germany are ahead of India in terms of economic size.

"The overall geopolitical and economic environment is favourable to India," he added, expressing optimism about the country’s economic trajectory. “If we stick to what is being planned and thought through, in 2.5 to 3 years, we will be the third-largest economy.”

In response to a question regarding former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments urging Apple to manufacture iPhones in the United States instead of countries like India, Mr. Subrahmanyam said, “What the tariff will be is uncertain. But given the dynamics, India will continue to be a cost-effective manufacturing destination.”

The NITI Aayog chief also revealed that a second round of the government’s asset monetisation pipeline is currently being prepared and is expected to be announced in August.
