Mangalore Today News Network

Kathua, Aug 03, 2021: A helicopter of the Indian Army crashed near Ranjit Sagar Dam lake in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. An NDRF team has been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties, PTI quoted Superintendent of Police of Pathankot in Punjab Surendra Lamba as saying. The dam is located about 30 km from Pathankot in Punjab.

The helicopter of the 254 Army Aviation Squadron took off from Mamun Cantt at 10:20 am. The helicopter was carrying out low-level sorties in the Ranjit Sagar Dam area when it crashed.

"Rescue teams have been rushed to the spot. Divers have also been called in. There is no information about the number of people who were on board this chopper," said RC Kotwal, SSP, Kathua district.

Earlier this year, in January, one pilot died after an Indian Army helicopter crashed in Kathua district’s Lakhanpur near the Jammu and Kashmir-Punjab border. The HAL Dhruv helicopter crashed after developing a technical snag. An MiG 21 Bison aircraft had crashed in Rajasthan’s Suratgarh while landing in January.
