Writer Na D’Souza unveils bust of Dr. Herman Moegling

Mangalore, July 7, 2012: Na D’Souza, the renowned Kannada writer, who was the chief guest of KACES Day, a program held to observe the birth anniversary of KACES founder Dr. C. D. Jathanna at Bishop Jathanna Auditorium in Balmatta on July 6, Friday, unveiled the bust of Dr. Moegling, founder of KTC.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that Christian missionaries who came to India in the early eighteenth century worked without hurting the religious sentiments of the local people. They also contributed a great deal in the form of educational institutions, printing houses, and hospitals. They studied Kannada and wrote and compiled several books out of love for the local language. Dr. Herman Moegling was one such great personality, he added. 


Quoting writer B. M. Shrikantaiah, he said that the Basel Mission has contributed a great deal to Kannada language with the help of the local people. They also translated the hymns of Purandaradasa and Kanakadasa into German for the benefit of the German people. They also set the foundation for Kannada journalism by introducing the printing press, he added. 


Mr. D’Souza suggested organizing an exhibition of the works of Dr. Moegling in the city. 


P. B. Harish Rai, president of DKWJU, was the guest of honor, and Dr. H. R. Cabral, KTC principal, presided. 


The organizers felicitated H. N. Venkatesh Prasanna, CCB inspector, for being the first KATHRI student to get his PhD.
