Mangalore, July 16, 2012 : A team of women amateur Yakshagana artistes presented a Yakshana prasanga called Shashiprabha Parinaya in the tenku tittu style in Town Hall on Sunday.

women The audience greatly appreciated the team’s performance, which was equal to the performance of any professional Yakshagana artiste team. Disha Shetty played the role of Kamalagandhini while Varsha Shetty and Malathi Rao played the roles of Kamaladhawaja and Marthandajea, respectively. Besides, Pramada Shetty played the role of Shashiprabha; Shubada Shetty played the role of Bhramarakuntale; and Jayashree Devadiga played the role of Ghoraroopi.

Shashiprabha Parinaya is based on the mythological tale in which two princes invade Queen Shashiprabha’s territory, and in response, the queen sends her army of warrior women to fight the men. Unfortunately, the queen’s trusted warrior minister falls in love with Marthandateja and joins him. The furious queen prays to God and creates Ghoraroopi and sends him to destroy the invaders. Ghoraroopi captures the traitor and disfigures her. However, the two princes apply divine medicines on Bhramarakuntale’s body and she gets back her good looks. She then reveals the secret of defeating the queen, who has special powers. Marthandateja then secretly enters the palace and steals the necklace that gives her divine powers. But the queen catches him red-handed and a battle ensues between them. Goddess Kali then appears before the warriors and advices the queen to stop the battle as Marthandatheja is a devotee of Vishnu and defeating him is very difficult. The queen therefore marries Marthandatheja while her minister marries his brother.

The Yakshagana show was presented by Shri Krishna Yaksha Sabha of Mallikatte as part of its 11th annual Yakshagana Sapthaha, which began on Saturday. The show, which began at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, lasted for 12 hours.
