The Oxygen plant would be constructed at a cost of Rs 5 lakh and is sponsored by the Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) as a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility undertaking.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the plant which was held at the Hospital premises on Friday, Regional Medical Officer Saroja P said that permission for the project was obtained when V Ponnuraj was the Deputy Commissioner. The hospital is currently using Malabar Oxygen cylinders at a cost of Rs 9,000 per day. On an average, 150-200 patients receive aid from these oxygen cylinders in the Hospital. However, with the installation of Liquified Oxygen unit, the cost can be reduced by 35 per cent, she informed.

The unit will have several advantages like there would be 24X7 oxygen supply, no wastage of oxygen in the form of leakage etc. Though at present the oxygen is supplied to OT and ICU, the hospital authorities are contemplating to supply oxygen even to the wards, after the installation of Oxygen plant.

The Oxygen unit is installed by British Oxygen Corporation and is funded by the Indian Overseas Bank, while the civil works are funded by Arogya Raksha Samiti of Wenlock Hospital. The civil work is taken up at a cost of Rs 8.45 lakh. The unit is expected to be completed within two months.

Speaking on the occasion, IOB Managing Director M Narendra said that IOB is funding the Liquified Oxygen supply project as a part of its platinum jubilee celebration. “The Bank would extend its support to the hospital whenever the need arises,” he said.
District Medical Officer Dr Sangameshwara was present.
