Week-long awareness program on Gram Sabha launched in city

Mangalore, Jun 22, 2012: The Janashikshana Trust and the Hunger Project in collaboration with Panchayat Raj Institutions, Apna Desh Association, Chittara Balaga, and Sugrama Sangha inaugurated the Grama Sabhe Janajagruthi Karyakrama 2012, a one-week awareness program on Gram Sabha, on the premises of DK ZP complex in Mangalore on June 21, Thursday.

K. T. Shailaja Bhat, president of the ZP, unveiled charts related to the program, and said that women’s empowerment is essential for the development of villages.

Dr. K. N. Vijayprakash, CEO of ZP, unveiled pamphlets about the awareness program and said that such awareness programs are essential as the Gram Sabhas are getting weak.

Krishna Moolya of Jana Shikshana Trust said that the awareness program is being held in Amtadi, Ira, Balepuni, Kadeshwalya, Manchi, and Balthila GPs on a pilot basis. The program will be held under the leadership of GP women members who will speak about the significance of Gram Sabha. Further, such programs will be held in different parts of the GPs, he said.

Sheena Shetty, director of the Jana Shikshana Trust; Arun Furtado, district welfare officer; and presidents of various Gram Sabhas were present.
