Mangalore, November 25: Vanessa D’Souza, a student of Derik’s Chess School, has emerged the 1st CAI (Chess Association of India) National Women’s Chess champion. The event was held at Palakkad in Kerala on Nov 18 – 21 by the Palakkad District Chess Association on behalf of the Kerala Chess Association under the aegis of CAI. Vanessa received a share of a total prize pool of Rs. 3 lakh.

Vanessa won the gold and a cash prize of Rs. 20,000. She is the first person to represent CAI in an International event in 2011. Vanessa is a student of St. Agnes High School.


Mahima Khandige won a runner up silver in the Under 14 Girls’ Category; and Sanchitha Kamath won the 2nd runner up bronze in the same category. Both are students of St. Agnes Girls’ High School.


Sanskrithi Rao of BGS Education Centre, Kavoor won the runner up silver in the Under 12 category; and Reesha Shenoy of Carmel English Medium School won the runner up silver in the Under 10 category. Adithi B. Rao of Sharada Vidhyalaya won the 4th place and Ashwija Bharanya won the 5th place in the Under 10 category.
