Mangalore, Oct 31, 2012: Under trials, who were lodged at the overcrowded District Sub Jail, were shifted to the new jail building, on Oct 31, Wednesday.
Owing to overcrowding in the sub jail, fights had become common, owing to which the jailers shifted some of them to the new building, which is located close to the old sub jail building.

The District Sub Jail was constructed by the British and lacks modern security facilities. Since it was too small to accommodate the rising number of prisoners, fights had become common. The old jail can accommodate only 150 prisoners, but over 290 prisoners were lodged there.
Although Rs. 6 crore was earmarked for the construction of a new jail building, it still lacks water and power connection. Policemen were present in large numbers when the inmates were shifted.
DIG M. C. Vishwanathaiah monitored the shifting operation and examined the new building before the inmates were shifted.
