Udupi, Oct 2, 2026: The Udupi district police have detected four firearms that were allegedly modified without authorisation during a month-long special inspection drive conducted across the district.

The drive was launched in view of recent firearm-related incidents in the district and focused on verifying the credentials of firearm licence holders, the condition of weapons and any unauthorised modifications, Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said.

During the drive, police inspected 2,925 firearms, including 1,759 single-barrel muzzle-loading (SBML) guns, 554 single-barrel breech-loading (SBBL) guns, 318 double-barrel breech-loading (DBBL) guns, six double-barrel muzzle-loading (DBML) guns, 120 pistols, 119 revolvers, 30 rifles, 13 bore guns and six non-permissible bore (NP bore) firearms.

Unauthorised modifications were found in four firearms. Separate cases have been registered against the respective licence holders at Shankaranarayana, Kota, Brahmavar and Karkala Town police stations under Section 25 of the Indian Arms Act, 1959. Investigations are underway.

The police also reviewed the conduct of history-sheeters and firearm licence holders to determine whether any licence holder had been involved in criminal cases after obtaining the weapon, the SP said.

The Udupi district police said monitoring of firearms would continue and legal action would be taken against illegal possession, use and unauthorised modifications to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.

Police have urged the public to report information about illegal possession, use or modification of firearms to the nearest police station or the Udupi District Police Control Room at 0820-2526444, 0820-2526709, or via WhatsApp at 9480805400.
