Udupi police, Chamber of commerce set to install 601 CCTV cameras

Udupi, Aug 12, 2025: To strengthen law and order, the Udupi District Police, in collaboration with the Udupi District Chamber of Commerce, has launched an ambitious project to install 601 CCTV cameras at 207 junctions across the district at a cost of ₹2.5 crore, Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar announced on Monday.

Speaking at a press meet, the SP said the first phase will cover border areas, communally sensitive zones, and key public spots including Mala, Hosmar, Sacheripete (Karkala Rural), Sanur (Karkala Town), Someshwara (Hebri), Hosangadi (Amasbail), Dali (Kollur), Mel Gangolli (Gangolli), Malpe Beach, and the Udupi city bus stand.

Additionally, high-quality cameras will be installed at prominent locations such as Kalsanka, Karavali Junction, Indrali Bridge, Santhekatte, service bus stand, old KSRTC bus stand, M Kodi (Kundapur), Kandlur market, Baradi and Naravi (Karkala subdivision). Footage will be monitored round-the-clock by local police stations and the district control room.

The police have also rolled out the “Drishti Project”, aimed at preventing crimes in select towns and markets through enhanced night patrols from 10 pm to 6 am. Deployed security personnel will alert beat police or the control room upon spotting suspicious activity. Their remuneration will be covered by local residents.

Currently, Drishti is operational in 12 locations — two each in Udupi city, Shirva, and Gangolli police station limits, and one each in Kundapur, Hebri, Karkala Town, Hiriyadka, Shankaranarayana, and Brahmavar. The initiative will be extended to 21 more locations in the district soon.
