Udupi, 7 April 2012: People are having a difficult time with the shortage of water, but on the other hand the shortage of liquor in Bar – Wine shop has made the liquor consumer’s life miserable. Since the last 5 days there has been shortage of liquor in the state, because the supply has stopped. If there is no supply for two more days, then it is difficult for the wine shops to conduct any business.

In the state budget presented on 21st March the tax on liquor has been raised. So the rates of all kind of Beer and liquor has been raised by 12% from 1st of April. But the liquor tax department has not yet approved the raise so far. Without their approval the liquor suppliers are not supplying. So even if the liquor is being manufactured it is not supplied to the wine shops and the stock the wine shops had is already finished, the liquor sellers are helpless and the liquor consumers are reeling.

In Udupi district there are about 340 licensed liquor dealers. On Wednesday more than 180 dealers came to Manipal depot in the morning, waited until evening and returned empty handed. There is enough stock available in the Beer – liquor depots in the state, but they have to supply it including the tax from 1st April. But how much tax has to be added is not known so far from the department, say the depot personnel. But the wine sellers are facing problems from this, say State liquor sellers association Secretary Govindaraja Hegde.

If we look at it, it is not as serious problem as the water shortage, but if this problem is not resolved then the wine sellers who are already loosing since 5 days will have more problems. The wine consumers have already started to make noise saying that their favorite brands are not available. The crores of rupees tax money for the government is also being lost. If there is no supply for another two days then the wines shops will have to be closed, say one wine seller.
