Udupi: Fire breaks out at coconut unit in Katapady, losses estimated at Rs 10–15 lakh

Udupi, Sep 19, 2026: A fire broke out at a coconut processing and storage unit in Subhash Nagar, Katapady, in Kapu taluk, during the early hours of Saturday.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. The flames quickly spread to a large quantity of coconuts stored inside the unit.

On receiving information from local residents, two fire tenders from the Udupi Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot. Fire personnel launched an operation and brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby areas.

The unit, owned by Nalini Pushpalatha Salian, has been operating in the area for several years. A substantial quantity of coconuts stored at the premises was destroyed in the fire.

Preliminary estimates indicate that coconuts worth around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh may have been damaged. The exact extent of the loss is yet to be assessed.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and determine the total damage.
