Udupi District Assembly Elections: Cong wins 3 seats; Halady retains Kundapur, BJP regains Karkala

Udupi, May 8, 2013: The  BJP which had suffered a major setback in the ULB elections has received another drubbing from the voter in the Assembly elections. Of the five assembly constituencies in the district, the Congress has won three, while the BJP could win in Karkala while independent candidate Halady registered an emphatic win from Kundapur constituency.

It was a resounding victory for Congress candidate Pramod Madhwaraj in Udupi constituency. He won by a margin of 39525 votes against Sudhaker Shetty of the BJP who secured 47344 votes.

In Kaup, the Congress candidate Vinaykumar Sorake has registered a win by 2027 votes against Lalaji Mendon of the BJP. If Sorake secured 52782 votes, Lalaji polled 50927 votes.  This was a constituency where the Congress faced rebellion with former minister Vasanth Salian, a ticket aspirant quitting to contest as a JD(S) candidate. However, Salian could secure just 4327 votes.

In Byndoor, Congress candidate  Gopal Poojari won the election by securing  76647 votes as against  47068 votes polled by the BJP candidate.
