Udupi, Mach 21, 2012 : Counting of votes cast during the Udupi – Chikmagalur Lok Sabha elections on March 18 began on March 21 Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.

More than 68.2 percent of the 12,53,580 people on the voters’ list had cast their votes, and these votes were counted at T. A. Pai English Medium School in Kadiyali. The results will be declared by noon.

Sunil Kumar, the former MLA of Karkala and president of the State BJP Yuva Morcha; Jayaprakash Hegde, the former state minister; and S. L. Bhojegowda of Chikmagalur, are contesting these by-polls, nominated by the BJP, Congress, and JD (S), respectively.

The counting will be held in 16 rounds and the results will be announced this noon. Around 250 people have been deployed for the counting process. Around 1100 officers are supervising the process and 108 tables and 54 counting agents have been made available. Around 108 EVMs per round will be used to make the process easier.

Here are the results of the third round: Jayaprakash Hegde of Congress party gets 80,075 votes, Sunil Kumar of BJP gets 73,483 votes, and Bhojegowda of JD (S) gets 15,351 votes. This puts the Congress in the lead by 6,592 votes.
