Mangalore, Mar 27, 2012: The Karnataka Tulu Sahithya Academy organized its 4th meet and felicitation ceremony in commemoration of World Theatre Day in its office on March 27 Tuesday. Academy President Umanath Kotian presided. 


In his presidential address, Mr. Kotian said that the dramatists of the past presented their talents at night time and people enjoyed it, but now theatre has witnessed a lot of developments with plays being performed in modern settings at many places. Stating that Tulu mono acting is on the decline, he said that one of the modern developments of the theatre is the availability of female artistes.

He also said that there are several troupes presenting Tulu plays in Udupi and Mangalore and that the Tulu Academy is proud of the fact that Oriyardori Asal was shown for 25 weeks in several theatres simultaneously. 


The academy honored R. K. Mangalur, the senior theatre director and conferred Tulunad-dha Birse Award on Vijay Kumar Kodialbail in appreciation of the success of his movie Oriyardhori Asal. 


In his address, R. K. Mangalur said that theatre mirrors society, leaving the audience to pick the best messages conveyed by it. Complaining that modern plays have more comedy and less of moral values in them, he said that in the past people used to cherish for years the moral values conveyed by the plays they watched. 


Speaking on the occasion, Vijay Kumar Shetty said that this is the golden age of Tulu theatre as around 20 – 25 Tulu plays and movies are getting released in the district. He also urged Tulu enthusiasts to work hard for the inclusion of Tulu in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution. He also expressed his intention to release new Tulu films. 


R. K. Ullal, Sanjeeva S. Adyar, K. V. Shetty Kadri, Kishore D. Shetty, Rohini Jagaram, and Jagadish Kenchanakere were among the dignitaries on the dais.
